“John Arne Riise! Oohh, aaahhh! I wanna know-ow-ow, how you scored that goal!”

Liverpool fans became accustomed to witnessing the Norwegian find the back of the net with thunderous, long-range piledrivers during his seven seasons at Anfield.

Blessed with a venomous left foot, Reds supporters first witnessed what would become Riise’s trademark against bitter-rivals Manchester United when the full-back found the top corner with an unforgettable free-kick.

The 38-year-old would score 33 times during his Liverpool career, including memorable efforts against the likes of Everton, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and FC Barcelona.

And then there was his equally stunning free-kick against Celtic during pre-season in the summer of 2004, accompanied by an American commentator’s infamous cry of “Release the Kraken!”

But there is another Riise classic that you will not remember and that you will probably not have even seen - one that may have come to the attention of supporters following the UK release of the full-back’s autobiography ‘Running Man’ in September.

The strike in question comes during his time at AS Monaco, with the Norwegian spending three seasons with the French side after joining them in 1998.

Managed by current Leicester City boss Claude Puel, team-mates at the time included Fabien Barthez, Rafael Marquez, Ludovic Giuly, David Trezeguet, Costinha and Willy Sagnol, as well as future Liverpool colleagues Salif Diao and Patrice Luzi.

Yet it was Riise who grabbed the headlines ahead of his a-list team-mates when scoring his first ever senior goal against Bordeaux in February 2000.

The ball is knocked down to the full-back, who watches it bounce twice before unleashing an unbelievable first-time strike that flies into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
