Microsoft is slashing 5% of its workforce — about 10,000 roles — in the latest blow for the tech sector as it seeks to reduce costs. The news comes as Amazon started to lay off workers in the US, Canada and Costa Rica as part of its bid to reduce headcount by 18,000. Both companies said the measures were necessary to offset slowing sales and a possible recession. The giants join big names including Salesforce, which is cutting headcount by 10%, Facebook’s parent Meta, which announced widespread job cuts last fall, and Twitter, which has cut at least half of its workforce.
