Timmy Mallett has offended Scots by claiming Bonnie Prince Charlie dressed like a member of the Ku Klux Klan.

The TV star, 67, said the disguise worn by the young royal looked like the gown used by the infamous racist group. The 'Wackaday' presenter Mallett was discussing the outfit on Facebook during a cycle ride on the Hebridean Way.

He told nearly 100K followers that the hooded robe Bonnie Prince Charlie wore to hide from officials looked like Klu Klux Klan wear. He said: "Actually that looks a bit scary, like a Ku Klux Klan sort of hood."

But Joanne Watson, Highlands and Islands costume historian who designed the robe he was referring to, wants a public apology.

She told the Press and Journal: "I remain shocked that the historically accurate Irish mantle I made was compared to a Ku Klux Klan outfit by Mr Mallett. I want a public apology for dismissing my work and for making up Scottish history. "
