Gavin Potter’s late, late show helps Tyrone past Derry in Ulster U20 Championship

Tyrone 0-13 Derry 1-9

Gavin Potter had the final say for Tyrone

Gavin Potter got Tyrone over the line to maintain their unbeaten run in the Ulster U20FC with a dramatic win in Derry.

In a final quarter, which Tyrone controlled, it took Potter’s late fisted point to secure the victory at the death.

The Red Hands held a grip of proceedings as the game ticked into stoppage time, leading 0-12 to 0-9.

However, Derry, who had squandered three point chances, came with a late goal as a switch of the play put Johnny McGuckian in space and he blasted to the top corner.

There was time for a winner and when Conor McAneney plonked a kick-out down the wing Conor O’Neill. Noah Grimes was also involved before Gavin Potter fisted over the bar.

In a game that was level on six occasions, Derry were twice two points ahead in the first half with points from Eoin Higgins, Oisín Doherty and Cahir Spiers.

The pick of the scores was a booming Ryan McNicholl point for Derry but it was Joey Clarke who levelled matters at half-time, 0-5 each.

Two Ronan Cassidy points had Tyrone ahead before Doherty (twice) scored to tie the game once again.

With 10 minutes to go, Tyrone took control with points from substitutes Ruairi McCullagh and Grimes.

It looked enough for Tyrone but when McGuckian hit the net, they need Potter’s late, late winner.
