Everything the Royals Said About Kate Middleton's Cancer News

On March 22, the Princess of Wales released a video statement announcing to the world that she has cancer.

The royal, who had been the focus of weeks' worth of international speculation, conspiracy theories and gossip during her absence from the public eye while recovering from abdominal surgery in January, explained that she was undergoing preventative chemotherapy and wanted to take time to explain what was happening to her three young children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, in a way they would understand.

Kate spoke positively of her condition, saying that she is getting "stronger every day." Though she looks forward to returning to her royal duties, she stressed that for the time being, she needs to focus on "making a full recovery."

After the announcement was made, the princess received an outpouring of support on social media from fans, celebrities and world leaders. She also received support from her family members, a number of whom sent public messages.

Here, Newsweek looks at everything the royals have said about Kate's cancer news, so far, from King Charles to Prince Harry.

King Charles III

King Charles III was one of the first royals to speak out after Kate's cancer announcement via a spokesperson at Buckingham Palace. The king himself has been facing treatment for cancer after being diagnosed following a prostate procedure in January.

"Charles is 'so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did' and has 'remained in the closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law throughout the past weeks,' after they spent time in hospital together," Reuters quoted a Buckingham Palace spokesperson as saying on March 22 just an hour after the princess' statement.

They added, "Charles and his wife [Queen] Camilla 'will continue to offer their love and support to the whole family through this difficult time.'"

Queen Camilla

Queen Camilla gave an update on Kate at her first public engagement since the announcement on March 27 in the county of Shropshire, in western England.

The queen met with large crowds during a visit to a farmers market in the town of Shrewsbury, where two young people held signs reading: "Send our Love to Kate."

Camilla stopped to speak to them, taking the signs and saying she would pass them on to the princess.

"I know that Catherine is thrilled by all the kind wishes and support," she said.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Kate's brother- and sister-in-law, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, sent their own messages of support following her cancer announcement.

A spokesperson for the couple highlighted the princess' request for privacy at this difficult time, saying: "We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace."

Sarah "Fergie" Ferguson

Duchess Sarah "Fergie" Ferguson, who despite divorcing Prince Andrew in 1996, still lives with the royal in Windsor and has attended regular family events since the accession of King Charles in 2022, also sent her love to Kate.

Fergie herself was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 and has spoken about her experience in undergoing a mastectomy publicly, raising awareness for the disease. In 2024, she also announced that she had been diagnosed with skin cancer.

In a post to her social media accounts on March 25, the duchess said she was "full of admiration" for Kate's decision to be so open about her own diagnosis.

"All my thoughts and prayers are with the Princess of Wales as she starts her treatment. I know she will be surrounded by the love of her family and everyone is praying for the best outcome," she said.

"As someone who has faced their own battles with cancer in recent months, I am full of admiration for the way she has spoken publicly about her diagnosis and know it will do a tremendous amount of good to raise awareness. I hope she will now be given the time, space and privacy to heal."

The Prince and Princess of Wales

After the initial outpouring of support for Kate, a spokesperson for Kensington Palace said on March 23 that both she and Prince William had been "touched" by the well-wishes she'd received.

"The Prince and Princess are both enormously touched by the kind messages from people here in the U.K., across the Commonwealth and around the world in response to Her Royal Highness' message," the spokesperson said.

"They are extremely moved by the public's warmth and support and are grateful for the understanding of their request for privacy at this time."
