Standing to address the New York courtroom, Sam Bankman-Fried finally acknowledged the pain and suffering of the thousands of victims of FTX, his failed cryptocurrency exchange.

“A lot of people feel really let down, and they were very let down, and I am sorry about that,” the one-time billionaire told the Manhattan federal court before he was sentenced to a lengthy jail term.

Wearing a beige prison jumpsuit and with his distinctive mess of curly hair, Bankman-Fried, 32, made a rambling, at times incoherent 20-minute speech to Judge Lewis Kaplan in which he claimed that he and his FTX co-founders had “built something beautiful”, and he had “thrown it all away”. “It haunts me every day,” he said.
