John Eastman's Potential Disbarment Sparks MAGA Fury

Donald Trump supporters have reacted with fury on social media after a judge called for this disbarment of John Eastman, a lawyer accused of being involved in efforts to reverse the 2020 presidential election outcome.

The recommendation was made by State Bar Court of California Judge Yvette Roland on March 27 after she investigated a complaint initially filled in 2023 by the California State Bar. Roland concluded Eastman had engaged in "misconduct" and ruled against him on 10 of the 11 charges initially filed.

Eastman is the latest Trump-affiliated figure to face legal difficulties. Trump himself is facing four criminal trials over allegations he orchestrated the payment of hush money to an adult film actress, mishandled classified documents, and attempted to overturn Joe Biden's 2020 election victory nationwide and in the state of Georgia specifically. The former president, and presumptive 2024 Republican presidential candidate, has pleaded not guilty to all counts and has denied any wrongdoing.

A number of Republicans and supporters of Trump's Make America Make Again movement criticized Roland's recommendation on X, formerly Twitter.

Georgia House Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene wrote: "John Eastman is a great attorney and loves this country. He should not lose his law license."

The post was viewed more than 129,000 times, receiving more than 2,000 likes and 434 reposts from other X users.

Mollie Hemingway, the editor-in-chief of The Federalist, a conservative-leaning publication, shared a post about Eastman's potential disbarment, adding: "This is expected, but still disgusting. Democrats' well-funded and well coordinated campaign to use lawfare and disbarment proceedings against political opponents is celebrated by corporate media.

"Even as Democrat lawyers who worked to remove the Republican nominee from the ballot were shot down 9-0 at the Supreme Court. And nothing has happened to them except for celebration by the same corporate media."

Earlier in March, the Supreme Court unanimously agreed to reverse a Colorado Supreme Court ruling that would have removed Trump from the state's primary ballot on the basis that he was constitutionally ineligible to serve as president because of the insurrection clause in the Constitution's 14th Amendment.

X user Mark Mendlovitz, whose bio says "Leftism is a cult," wrote: "John Eastman, who was ruled to be disbarred on Wednesday by California kangaroo court judge Yvette Roland, is yet another (temporary) casualty of lawfare by a fascist Left that will stop at nothing to try to punish everyone involved with President Trump.

"I predict this outrageous overreach against one of America's sharpest legal minds will eventually be overturned at a higher level and set a precedent that will come back to bite the Trump-deranged Left."

Also critical of the decision was Benjamin Weingarten, the editor-in-chief of the website RealClearInvestigations and author of a book alleging a "progressive Islamist" takeover of the Democratic Party.

He shared a post on Roland's decision, adding: "Post-America. John Eastman is an infinitely wiser, more decent, and patriotic man than all the Lawfare Inquisitors combined."

In her recommendation, Roland wrote: "In view of the circumstances surrounding Eastman's misconduct and balancing the aggravation and mitigation, the court recommends that John Eastman be disbarred."

In a post published on his Substack blog on March 28, Eastman said he would appeal the ruling.

He wrote: "We will appeal the decision, of course, and hopefully the California Bar Review Court, the California Supreme Court, or the U.S. Supreme Court will step in to put a stop to this 'lawfare' that has become a serious threat to the First Amendment, the right of controversial clients and causes to legal representation, and more broadly to our adversarial system of justice."
