A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a stabbing at Kennington tube station left two people in hospital.

The suspect has also been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault. Officers were called to the station at around 10.30pm following reports of a man being stabbed on the northbound platform.

A second man was also believed to be injured after stepping in to try and prevent the attack. A member of the public later reported being groped as the suspect fled the station.

Police and ambulance crews attended the scene, and the victims, two men in their 40s, were taken to hospital. Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

British Transport Police Senior investigating officer, Detective Inspector Paul Attwell said: “This has understandably been a worrying time for the travelling public and our officers have been working around the clock to investigate. Extensive lines of enquiry have been followed and a man has now been arrested in connection with this incident. We are not looking for anyone else at this time. Our enhanced high-visibility patrols will continue in the area to reassure the travelling public this Bank Holiday weekend.”

The attack happened the same day as a knifeman attacked a man at Beckenham Junction, London in an unrelated incident. BTP were alerted to reports of two men fighting while entering a train at Shortlands railway station.

London saw 13,957 instances of "knife-enabled crime" in the 12 month period up to September 2023, a 22 per cent increase on the year before. Knife-enabled crime recorded by police across England and Wales, excluding Devon, Cornwall and Greater Manchester Poilice, increased by five per cent to 48,716 offences in the same time period. Knife-enabled crime was still five per cent lower than pre-coronavirus pandemic levels in the year ending March 2020 when 51,228 offences were recorded, the Office for National Statistics said.
