Chelsea defender Levi Colwill is hoping to return from a toe injury in time to face Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final on April 20.

Colwill has not played since the 2-2 draw at Brentford a month ago, but he actually first sustained the problem at Crystal Palace during the 3-1 victory at Selhurst Park a few weeks earlier.

The England centre-back felt some pain after landing heavily during the London derby, but he continued to make himself available for games, including the Carabao Cup final defeat against Liverpool.

The club were already treating the issue, diagnosed as a metatarsophalangeal joint ligament injury, but decided Colwill needed to spend some time on the sidelines after it got worse following the Brentford match.

As part of his rehab he has had to wear a protective boot, but that came off a few weeks ago. Chelsea are not putting a timeline on his return but Colwill is now doing some light training.

It is unlikely he will be back for their next two Premier League games against Manchester United and Sheffield United, but the 21-year-old has set his sights on making the squad to face Pep Guardiola’s side at Wembley.
