Israel made mistake by striking Iranian consulate in Damascus, Khamenei says

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei noted that consulates and embassies, no matter where they are located, are the territory of a foreign country

DUBAI, April 10. /TASS/. Israel made a mistake when it attacked a consular office of the Iranian Embassy in Syria and will be punished for the strike, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a speech marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

"The wicked regime (Israel - TASS) made a mistake and must be punished and it shall be," he said during the address aired by SNN. The Iranian spiritual leader noted that consulates and embassies, no matter where they are located, are the territory of a foreign country. "When they attacked our consulate, they attacked our soil," he added.

On April 1, the Public Relations Department for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said that seven Iranian military advisers had been killed in an Israeli airstrike on Tehran’s consular office in Damascus, including two IRGC generals and five officers. Israel has not made any official statements assuming responsibility for the attack. That said, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari told CNN that the strike had not targeted Iran’s consulate but an IRGC military facility, which he claimed had only been disguised as a civilian building.
