Photos of the scene taken on Wednesday showed a cordon surrounding a block of flats and police officers stationed at the scene.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul McVeigh said: “Although an arrest was made yesterday evening in the Litherland area our enquiries are ongoing and house-to-house, CCTV and witness enquiries are still being carried out.

"I would like to reassure residents that at present we believe this was an isolated incident that took place inside an address in the area and no one else was harmed. If you were on Cross Hey at around 9am yesterday and saw or heard something suspicious which has led to this violent incident please contact us.

“I would also ask people who live in the area to check their doorbell or CCTV footage just in case they may have captured something which may be vital to the case. This information could be essential to our investigation and I would urge anyone with information to contact us.”
