A football club sacked its convicted rapist manager just three days after promoting him to the top job.

Sam Wilson was sentenced to five years in prison in 2015. Wilson, 32, who had been a player at Warrington Rylands FC since 2021, stepped up to become the club's interim manager in February.

His appointment was made permanent on Saturday on a two-year deal, but in a social media post on Tuesday, April 16 the club said it had terminated Wilson's contract by "mutual consent". A spokesperson said: "The club has tonight terminated the contract of manager, Sam Wilson, by mutual consent. No further comment will be made by the club."

Warrington Rylands FC, which competes in the Northern Premier League, the seventh tier of English football, did not respond to a further request for comment from the ECHO. Wilson confirmed to the BBC in a phone call that his contract had been terminated, but hung up when asked if the situation related to his conviction.

Wilson was 24 when he was convicted of rape after a trial at Manchester Crown Court. The court heard how Wilson took advantage and forced himself on the woman at a rented flat on Laystall Street in Manchester's city centre. The victim had been chatting to one of Wilson's friends at a nightclub during a night out in May 2013.

She agreed to go back to the flat that the friend had rented for the night, where she had consensual sex with him. Afterwards, Wilson, who had not even spoken to the woman, entered the room and forced himself on her. She fled the apartment and immediately dialled the police. As well as being jailed, Wilson was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders' Register for life.

Speaking in 2015 after Wilson was jailed, Detective Constable Sophie Swift, from Greater Manchester Police's serious sexual offences unit, praised the victim for her courageous testimony. She said: "Wilson walked into that room and saw his friend having consensual sex with the woman.

"Without her consent, he then took advantage of the situation and raped her. I would like to applaud the bravery of the woman, who courageously relived her ordeal by giving evidence in court, which in itself can be very upsetting, and facing down her attacker.

"The jury did not believe Wilson’s assertion the sex was consensual and found him guilty of rape. He will now serve five years in prison, which I hope sends out a message to others that if you do take advantage of a woman without her consent it is rape, and the police, Crown Prosecution Service and the courts will prosecute you."
