A boarding school pupil tried to murder his two roommates by smashing them on the head with a claw hammer as they slept, a court heard.

The “horrifying” attack took place at 12.50am in a boarding house at Blundell’s school in Tiverton, Devon, in June last year.

Henry Roffe-Silvester, 38, the housemaster, was also attacked with a hammer when he went to investigate the noise.

The 17-year-old attacker, who cannot be named because of his age, denies three counts of attempted murder and said in the immediate aftermath of the attack that he was “dreaming”. He said he had been watching a horror movie before falling asleep 40 minutes before the attack, and had hammers “for protection” and “to prepare for the zombie apocalypse”.
