Teenager Eoin Kenny – son of the former Ireland and Dundalk boss Stephen – says he’s delighted to have made the leap from Dundalk fan to first team player after his debut earlier this week.

The youth international had been on the fringes of the first team at Oriel Park for some time but he was finally summoned from the bench and thrown into the action late on away to Bohemians on Monday night where his dad – a former manager of Bohs and Shamrock Rovers – was in the stands to witness the debut.

"I'm glad to get that milestone. It's a big achievement and it's one that I'm proud of. Hopefully, there'll be many more in the future,” Kenny told club media.

"I have been training with the first team squad since last year, so it was a long time coming. I am a fan of the club myself, so it was good for me.

"I have had great coaches, from the Kennedy Cup where I played with Dundalk Schoolboys, played with Rock Celtic but I obviously went to the (Dundalk) games all the time as a young boy so it was a proud moment, it was surreal.”

Form so far has left Dundalk rooted to the bottom of the table, with what is their worst start to a season in history.

While they have clocked up three successive clean sheets in home games, scoring goals is a particular problem, Dundalk with just three league goals in 10 games so they could look to young attacking talents like Kenny to deliver.

"We have really talented strikers at the club,” says Kenny. “Chances haven’t landed, Jamie (Gullan) scored a great free-kick in Tallaght, in training you can see the talent we have in goalscorers and we have other areas of the pitch where people can score goals.

"So I wouldn’t get worked up on that, the chances are coming and once we get one the goals will flow.”
