A Tiverton man has been making waves with wildlife hero Steve Backshall.

Chris Berry, a Tiverton Town Council member and governor of Two Moors Primary School is also part of the Devon Coordinator for British Divers Marine Life Rescue for the Sela Project.

British Divers Marine Life Rescue is a British charity established in 1988 and is a frontline marine mammal response organisation. It utilises a network of trained volunteers around the country to respond to marine mammals potentially in need of assistance via a public 24 hour hotline and callout system.

Chris explained how he met Steve Backshall MBE, a television presenter, naturalist and writer, best known for the BBC show Deadly 60.

Speaking shortly after the show was aired this year he said: “I was filming with a team from BDMLR in Oxwich Bay Wales in February 2023 training Steve to rescue Whales Dolphins and Seals as part of the filming for Sky series "Whale with Steve Backshall". Which is now available on Sky Nature and Now TV.

“He did the video for my son and the pupils of Two moors school. In which he calls me " An Absolute Legend " He also shared a Facebook post with a picture of me by the yellow pontoons also attached.

“He then did a show on Dec 2023 at the Northcott Great Hall in Exeter "Ocean" where we were invited backstage so that I could present him his certificate for becoming a BDMLR Marine Mammal Medic.”
