The candidates battling it out next month for a seat on Solihull Council have been revealed. A third of Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council’s seats are up for grabs on Thursday, May 2, and the results will impact both sides of the chamber.

Going into the election the Conservatives have a majority on the council with 29 members. The Green Party has 12 councillors while there are currently six Liberal Democrats and four independents.

The council’s deputy leader, Conservative councillor Karen Grinsell, will be defending her Shirley East seat on election day. Coun Tony Dicicco, the cabinet member for Adult Social Care and Health, will be defending his Meriden seat, while Conservative councillor David Pinwell - chairman of the Economic Development and Managed Growth Scrutiny Board - will be defending his Knowle seat.

Conservative Peter Hogarth, the chairman of the Governance Committee, will be defending his Silhill seat. Meanwhile Coun Max McLoughlin, the leader of the Green Group on the authority, is defending his Shirley South seat.

The Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Labour and the Greens are standing candidates in all 17 wards being contested. There are two independent candidates while the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition has put forward one candidate.

Votes will be able to take part in the democratic process on May 2 between 7am and 10pm. Voters, who will need to bring identification to the ballot box, will also be able to take part in the elections of a Police and Crime Commissioner and the Combined Authority Mayor on election day.

Results for the Solihull wards are set to be announced on the afternoon of May 3.
