The second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs certainly has gotten off to a thrilling start. On Tuesday, both games ended up going to overtime and provided quite a bit of drama.

The New York Rangers were able to outlast the Carolina Hurricanes, 4-3, in a double-overtime thriller at Madison Square Garden in Game 2. After going through the first overtime period without either team finding the back of the net, Rangers forward Vincent Trocheck was finally able to cash in on his team's power-play opportunity as he scored the game-winning goal at the 7:24 mark of the second overtime frame.

Meanwhile, the Dallas Stars flexed their offensive muscles in the early stage of Game 1. The Stars raced out to a 3-0 advantage against the Colorado Avalanche in the opening period thanks to goals from Ryan Suter, Wyatt Johnston and Jamie Benn. However, the Avalanche chipped away at the deficit and star forward Nathan MacKinnon tied the game with a goal early in the third period. At the 11:03 mark of overtime, Avalanche forward Miles Wood completed the comeback to help his team take Game 1 of the series.

The other Western Conference second-round matchup gets underway Wednesday when the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers begin their second-round series.

The structure of the playoffs is as follows:

  • The division winner with the most points in each conference will face the second Wild Card team in the first round. The division winner with fewer points in each conference will match up with the top Wild Card team in the first round.
  • Each series will be a best-of-seven format.
  • Home-ice advantage goes to the team with the top seed in the first two rounds of the playoffs. The team with the most points in the regular season has home-ice advantage in the conference finals and Stanley Cup Final.
