Just when you thought the will-they-won't-they phase of Martha (Sally Bretton) and Humphrey's (Kris Marshall) relationship was and truly behind them, Beyond Paradise appears to be throwing the almost-wedded couple into chaos once again.

If you caught the sneak peek to the finale episode, you'll know exactly what we're talking about.

The downfall of Martha-Humphrey begins with Martha staring uncertainly at her wedding dress hanging on the mirror.

Her trepidation is followed by a severe-looking Martha sitting down with Humphrey, declaring: "I can't do it."

Humphrey pushes, asking her what she means, to which she replies: "The wedding."

As much as we don't want to believe the worst, there is absolutely nothing ambiguous about her doomsday tone or her words, even if they do seem to come out of the blue.

In the episode just aired, Martha and Humphrey couldn't have seemed more united.

Thrilled to be celebrating their upcoming nuptials at their joint surprise hen/stag do, the two take stock of how lucky they are to have the life they do, surrounded by the people who love them.

They cap the episode off with a sweet kiss followed by an order for a round of shots at the bar, in complete contrast to Martha's cold feet.

What could have happened to make her reconsider their future together, and is it likely to tear them apart for good?

Not according to Marshall. When speaking exclusively to Digital Spy about the Martha and Humphrey's relationship arc for season two Marshall said: "One of the wonderful things about Humphrey and Martha is that, actually, when they're not being existentially challenged in terms of their relationship and their existence as a couple, they're a lot of fun together.

"They sort of dovetail beautifully together, in that they don't really expect or have too many expectations of each other, aside from the fact that they just seem to work together."

Does that mean an existential crisis is on its way to test the two ahead of their big day? Perhaps. Season two has seen them attempt to realise their dream of becoming foster parents.

It's possible that some news regarding their application could be what sets the wheels in motion that lead Martha to the conclusion that the wedding cannot happen.

However, this season the two appear to be in a much stronger position to face hardships.

"In series two, we sort of see them much more as a united front," Marshall confirmed.

"They're quite powerful together, and they can do great things and provide a loving environment and extend that love outwards. I think that's kind of where we find them."

Despite what the gloomy sneak preview into the finale episode is implying, we have hope that the two will make it down the aisle in true Martha and Humphrey style – haphazardly and chaotically, and with an inevitable bumpiness in their frantic lives that will no doubt sort itself out.

Beyond Paradise airs on Fridays at 8pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
