A new Tesco has been set up in a Nottingham suburb after a rival store chain closed last year. The Tesco Express opened in Bramcote Lane, Wollaton, on Friday, April 19, after the supermarket chain took over what had previously been a Co-op.

The co-operative store shut on October 28 last year, with Central Co-op announcing it was one of four branches transferred to competitor Tesco. It was expected to reopen with the supermarket's blue and red branding around November 6 last year, but this was delayed.

Co-op staff were offered employment with Tesco when the old store closed, while customers were asked to use the other Co-op stores "within close proximity". Tesco, which is the UK's largest supermarket chain, said it was committed to providing value for its new customers in Wollaton.

Sandra Clements, who is the manager of the brand-new store, said: “We are extremely excited to be opening our new store and providing great service to our customers. We’ve got new colleagues joining the team from the local area and through our community programmes we hope to make an impact locally and play a key role in the local community.”

As well as providing a "wide range of great value food", Tesco said its new store will have a positive impact through its community programmes - Tesco Stronger Starts and Community Food Connection – across Nottingham.
