Woman killed, man injured in crash while fleeing police in New Hampshire, police say

The crash took place as officers were responding to the report of an assault.

A woman was killed and a man seriously injured early Monday in a crash that New Hampshire police say occurred when the pair sped away from officers responding to the report of an assault.

Nashua police said officers responded around 1:40 a.m. to the Residence Inn by Marriott at 25 Trafalgar Sq. for the report of an assault with a knife. As the officers were responding to the scene with their vehicle’s lights and sirens on, they saw a car speeding toward them on the wrong side of Somerset Parkway, according to the department.

The car, a black Nissan Altima, then crossed over the median to avoid the police vehicle, accelerating and speeding away, according to police. The responding officers reversed direction in an attempt to pursue the Altima.

“As officers reversed their direction the vehicle accelerated well past them and turned off the vehicle lights,” police said.

The department said the officers heard a crash “moments later” and found the Altima crashed in the parking lot of 402 Amherst St., with both occupants ejected from the vehicle in the crash.

The passenger, a 23-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the driver, a 23-year-old man, was taken by helicopter to a Boston-area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Additional details about the incident were not immediately available.

Police asked anyone with information to contact the department at 603-589-1665.
