Jon Bon Jovi Reveals He Hasn't 'Been a Saint' in His Marriage to Dorothea Hurley

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors

Jon Bon Jovi recently opened up about his enduring 34-year marriage to Dorthea Hurley, shedding light on past speculation regarding infidelity, notably referenced in his 1993 song, "Bed of Roses."

He revealed that taking responsibility for his mistakes was a key factor in sustaining their relationship. "These are all the wonderful clichés of rock stardom," he told The Independent in an interview published on Sunday, April 22. "It's about never lying about having been a saint, but not being a fool enough to f–k up the home life, either."

Bon Jovi married Hurley at the Graceland Chapel in Las Vegas in 1989, after being high school sweethearts at Sayreville War Memorial High School in New Jersey. "We had the No. 1 album, the No. 1 single, and we were playing three nights at the Forum in LA," he reminisced in 2010 to Men's Health.

"I turned to Dorothea and said, 'I got an idea. Why don't we go right now?' She said, 'You're out of your mind.' I said, 'Come on. What's better than this, right now, this moment?' And so we ran off to Las Vegas. Didn't tell a soul."

They are now coming up on their 35th anniversary and he credits his wife for her patience and tolerance over the years. He also told the publication that their relationship has flourished because of a "mutual admiration society, and being lucky enough to have grown up together."

In the song "Bed of Roses," the singer made his infidelity apparent to readers. The lyrics go, "Now as you close your eyes / Know I'll be thinking about you / While my mistress she calls me / To stand in her spotlight again / Tonight I won't be alone / But you know that don't mean I'm not lonely / I've got nothing to prove / For it's you that I'd die to defend."

The couple also share four children: Stephanie, 30, Jesse, 29, Jake, 21, and Romeo, 20.
