Holly Holm was sent hurtling backwards through the ropes during a brutal knockout loss in boxing, 13 years ago.

Before shocking the MMA world in 2015 by snatching the UFC bantamweight strap away from long-reigning champion Ronda Rousey via vicious head kick knockout, Holm was a high-calibre boxer.

'The Preacher's Daughter' won gloved world titles in three different weight classes and was named the Ring Magazine Female Fighter of the Year for two years running in 2005 and 2006.

Holm has always been noted for her sturdy chin but she was unable to stand up to the punishment dished out by Anne Sophie Mathis when they duked it out for two versions of the welterweight titles in 2011.

The pair met at the Route 66 Casino in New Mexico - a venue with a rich history of putting on female boxing bouts.

Holm had won her two previous contests at the casino and hotel, however, she was knocked out cold by Mathis in the seventh round of their bout.

After eating a crisp left hook from the French pioneer, Holm stumbled back into the ropes where she became tangled.

Mathis poured on the pressure and landed a quick flurry that knocked Holm out on her feet.

What happened next was very bizarre.

Rather than waving off the contest, the referee made the puzzling decision to help Holm back to her feet and signalled for the contest to continue.

Holm was then tagged by a right uppercut that sent down and out, through the ropes.

A video of the vicious stoppage recently resurfaced and there were a few UFC fans who were surprised at the standard of officiating in the fight.

Reacting to the video, one fan tweeted: "Criminal refereeing in this match. He should never let her get back to the fight in that condition."

Another wrote: "The ref didn't think to stop this when she was hanging on the ropes out cold?"

A third added: "How does the ref not call the fight as she is dangling from the ropes? He literally woke her up."

Holm rematched Mathis seven months after their inaugural encounter, this time defeating the Nancy puncher over the distance via unanimous decision.

She would fight two more times as a professional - beating Diana Prazak and Mary McGee - before hanging up her gloves in 2013.

Towards the back end of her gloved career, she had already competed in a couple of pro-MMA bouts and turned her full attention to the sport once she retired from boxing.

In 2015, she was signed by the UFC and later that year famously knocked out Rousey for the bantamweight crown.

Holm lost the 135lbs strap in her first defence against Miesha Tate and went on to unsuccessfully challenge for the featherweight belt twice.

She is now in the twilight of her career and was most recently submitted by Olympic gold medal-winning judoka Kayla Harrison at UFC 300 earlier this month.
