Buckingham Palace announced this evening that the King, 75, will return to "public-facing duties" just a few months after he received a cancer diagnosis and started undergoing treatment.

The Palace announced this evening that he would return to royal duties next week, starting with a symbolic visit to a cancer treatment centre.

While the news does not mark the end of his treatment, it has already buoyed the nation, with public figures coming out to hail the positive development this evening.

Among them is the Prime Minister, who issued a brief, six-word statement on social media hailing the announcement.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, Mr Sunak replied to the announcement with a straightforward: "Brilliant news to end the week!"

Dozens of people chimed in below the post agreeing with the PM, who was among several high-profile figures hailing the news this evening.

Home Secretary James cleverly commented that the announcement was "fantastic news", and leader of the opposition Sir Keir Starmer also shared a few words for the royal.

He said in a statement of his own that he was "delighted" to see the King "looking so well".

Sir Keir said: "Delighted to see His Majesty looking so well, and returning to public duties.

"On behalf of the Labour Party, I wish him and the Princess of Wales the best, as they continue their recovery with the support of their families."

Richard Moore, the current serving MI6 chief, responded in a similar vein to the Prime Minister, hailing the news as a "morale boost for the weekend" and adding: "God save The King!"

Buckingham Palace's announcement this evening specified that, alongside the coming symbolic visit, the King will undertake "a number of" other external engagements.

The statement read: "His Majesty The King will shortly return to public-facing duties after a period of treatment and recuperation following his recent cancer diagnosis.

"To help mark this milestone, The King and Queen will make a joint visit to a cancer treatment centre next Tuesday, where they will meet medical specialists and patients. This visit will be the first in a number of external engagements His Majesty will undertake in the weeks ahead."
