EFL club face ‘strangest relegation ever’ in never-before-seen scenario

Luke Davies

An EFL club could be relegated amid a bizarre scenario this afternoon.

The EFL League One and League Two campaigns will come to an end this afternoon. At both ends of the table, plenty is riding on the results.

Wrexham, Stockport County and Mansfield Town have secured promotion and will be playing in League One next season.

Forest Green Rovers are officially relegated with Sutton United and Colchester United jostling to avoid the drop to the National League.

Sutton are trailing Colchester by three points going into the final day. Sutton will face MK Dons while Colchester host play-off chasing Crewe Alexandra.

The Yellows must win and hope Colchester lose to have any hopes of staying in the division.

However, all relegation-threatened sides could still finish on the exact same number of points, goal difference, goals scored and goals scored

A 3-0 win for Sutton and a 1-0 defeat for Colchester could lead to this never-seen-before finish, as would a 3-1 victory and a 2-0 loss. Unlikely? Yes, but stranger things have happened in football.

According to official EFL rules, the two teams would then be separated by the number of games won this season. With this in mind, Sutton would be relegated with 10 wins, one fewer than Colchester, who currently boast 11 victories before today.

Usually, a header-to-head ‘tie-breaker’ would decide the fate but both fixtures ended in a 1-1 draw this season

A convincing victory for Sutton and a heavy defeat for Colchester would also see a swing in fortunes.

The fixtures will get underway at 3 pm (GMT) potentially grabbing the attention of Premier League fans.
