A man has died in a parachute incident at an industrial estate.

The tragedy happened at South West Industrial Estate in Shotton, County Durham, this afternoon (Saturday). Police received reports of concern for a man's welfare at about 2.30pm.

Despite the efforts of emergency services, the man, who was in his 40s, was confirmed dead at the scene. Durham Constabulary has said that a cordon will be in place for some time, Teesside Live reports.

The death is being treated as unexpected and enquires are now ongoing. Officers are appealing for information in connection with the incident.

D/Chief Inspector Mel Sutherland, leading the investigation, said: "Officers are keen to speak to anyone who was travelling on the A19 at around 12.20pm to 12.30pm who may have mobile phone footage or dashcam footage which captures the moments leading up to the incident."

He added, "Our thoughts remain with the man's family at this time."

The police are urging anyone with information to come forward and contact them on 101, citing incident number 168 of April 27.
