Norwin Senior Citizens Dinner provides service opportunity for students
Norwin High School’s cafeteria was transformed into a disco on April 21 for the 35th annual Senior Citizens Dinner — hosted by members of student council.
Kailey Resnik and Carlie Goretzka, student council members, chaired the event with a “Disco Fever” theme. About 300 senior citizens attended.
“It’s definitely really special, and it’s very rewarding to see all the hard work just come together,” said Goretzka, 17.
Goretzka, a junior, said the planning process taught her more about leadership and working with others to plan a large event.
Resnik, 17, said the process included contacting businesses for donations and writing a news release to announce the event.
One of the purposes of student council is to give back to the community and the school, according to Resnik, who is a senior.
“Seeing the turnout and seeing all the smiles on people’s faces has really shown me what that means,” she said.
This year was the first that JROTC was invited, and junior Luke Sivic was one member who showed up to help out.
“I’m just here to help … my community and serve the people I care a lot about,” said Sivic, 17.
Sivic, who wants to join the Air Force after graduation, said the dinner was an opportunity to show how much Norwin students care about the senior community.
Senior citizens received a three-course meal, including salad, a turkey dinner and peach cobbler. The event was Goretzka’s favorite student council event.
“It’s just nice to give back to the senior citizens and the community,” she said.
