A 51-year-old man suspected of a fatal hit-and-run crash in Santa Ana was taken into custody Friday.

Officers responded to the intersection of First and Sullivan Streets around 4:30 a.m. Thursday and found a male pedestrian unresponsive in the roadway, according to the Santa Ana Police Department.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by Orange County Fire Authority personnel a short time later. He was identified on Sunday as Joseph Purnell Alton, 29, of Buena Park, according to Santa Ana police spokeswoman Natalie Garcia.

Investigators determined that a driver heading west on First Street struck the pedestrian, standing in the roadway, then continued driving westbound, police said.

Luis Duarte Ibarra of Santa Ana was arrested around 4:45 a.m. Friday in Garden Grove and booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run. It was unclear if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

The vehicle allegedly involved in striking the pedestrian was also seized, police said.

The Santa Ana Police Department Collision Investigation Unit was conducting an ongoing investigation into the crash.

Anyone with information was urged to contact Detective K. Catlin at 714-245-8224 or the Santa Ana Police Department Traffic Division at 714-245-8200.
