Redditor MidnightWord shared the gardening tip in a viral post.

After harvesting their potatoes, they decided to test the crops by soaking them in water overnight.

Their discovery left fellow gardeners' skin crawling.

The Redditor shared a photo of the washed potatoes surrounded by dozens of dead critters.

"This is after letting them soak all night in water with vinegar. I added salt when I saw the worms coming out of the potatoes," they explained.

They noted there hadn't been any signs of the creepy crawlies after their initial rinse with water.

"When I first washed them, [there were] no visible worms or holes in the potatoes," they said.

After digging deeper, however, the slimy truth quickly emerged.

"As soon as I had them submerged for more than two minutes in the vinegar water, I saw two. Then four," they said.

"Now, of course, I couldn’t hope to count them. They are dead, mostly. There was one live one."

They explained that the region where they live is rich with earthworms, which prompted them to try the experiment out of sheer curiosity.

"In [a] previous post, there was much speculation about [the] type of worms, [and the] most convincing suggestion to me was [millipedes]," they said.

"I live in Oregon, I grew these in my backyard. I have lived in this house [for] less than two years. This is my first time growing anything in that section of the yard."

While their experiment proved wildly successful, viewers were less than pleased.

A few experienced gardeners were concerned that they were in hot water.

"OP, you've literally ruined potatoes for Reddit," said one commenter.

"For real. I'm horrified lol," deadpanned another.

"I just ate the last of my homegrown potatoes! Ugh!" said a third.

One optimistic viewer, however, joked that the discovery explains why homegrown food tends to be more delicious.

"The reason homegrown potatoes taste better is because of all the extra protein," they quipped.
