Driver who tried to beat speed camera while doing twice the limit by swerving onto wrong side of the road is banned for six months

  • The driver was travelling at 55mph in a 30mph zone in Braintree, Essex in 2023
  • The man, 22, swerved across the road in an effort to defeat the speed camera. 

A driver who was travelling at almost twice the speed limit and swerved onto the wrong side of the road hoping he could avoid being captured by a speed camera has been banned for six months. 

The 22-year-old motorist from Braintree, Essex was filmed by a speed camera travelling at 55mph in a 30mph zone on January 15, 2023. 

 Officers reviewing the case saw he was driving on the wrong side of the road in an effort to foil the speed camera. 

Essex Police's Roads Policing Support Team conducted an investigation and brought the man to court, where he pleaded guilty to careless driving.

Basildon Magistrates' Court heard that Essex Police were able to identify the man behind the wheel of the Ford Fiesta. 

According to Essex Police, the man was handed six penalty points which triggered a six-month driving ban. He was also ordered to pay more than £450 in fines following his conviction.  

A spokesperson for Essex Police said: 'We work hard to keep our roads safe for everyone.

'Deliberately driving on the wrong side of the road posed a very serious hazard for any other road user and could have resulted in someone being seriously injured.

'We’d ask all our drivers to use the roads correctly, adhere to the Highway Code and traffic law to ensure safety for all.'
