There is such a thing as getting too much press, it turns out, and Jerry Seinfeld definitely hit that point as he dropped by this week’s Saturday Night Live.
The comedian and Seinfeld star paid a surprise visit to SNL’s Weekend Update midway through a very long press tour for his Netflix movie Unfrosted. (Streaming now, he’d like you to know!) Colin Jost introduced him simply as “a man who did too much press,” and a harried Seinfeld sat down looking exhausted and disheveled. He didn’t even know which show he was on: “Is this a podcast?”
Seinfeld rattled off the names of all the press interviewers he’s talked to on his whirlwind of promotion: “Hoda, Mo Rocca, Chanel, Vlad…” He took time to address people out there suffering just like him: “If you’re struggling with press, you’re not alone. I’m talking to you, Ryan Gosling.” When Seinfeld started his promotion tour, he claimed, he was “funny, good-looking… now look at me. You think this is how I wanted to spend my 26th birthday?”
His nightmare isn’t over, though: Midway through his speech, Seinfeld took a call from a Univision reporter and launched right into another interview. He even offered to conduct the interview in Spanish! The Catalan dialect!
Watch the sketch above, and then grade this week’s SNL in our poll.
Love this one! Jerry is giddy-ing up! :))
having Seinfeld on dropped it down to a D. the only thing he’s exhausted from is trying to defend himself dating a 17 year old when he was pushing 40 and blaming people being upset about it on “liberals”🙄
(are the tvline mods also exhausted from deleting comments that don’t cater to your faves…)
You are kinda proving his point here
So we just excuse or choose to forget that he dated a minor? That disgusting fact should not be excused whether you’re a liberal.or conservative.
First of all, you’re assuming they slept together. Secondly, even if they did, the age of consent in NY is 17, so whatever you think of this, he broke no laws.
Seinfeld is the latest “comedy is dead because I can’t make jokes about marginalized people anymore” comedian, chuck him in the trash don’t give him spots on SNL, you are just encouraging this crap.
I mean yes he said that, but it’s odd because his comedy is basically pointing out weird things he’s noticed about humanity, I can’t really think of edgy humor seinfield had, he’s not Dave Chappell
It’s funny to read Jerry Seinfeld talk about comedy being dead yet now I’m reading that the Unfrosted movie has been circulating in test screenings for 2 years before it was eventually released on Netflix. This is a movie he wrote and directed, yet like many pointed out, Larry David has been having a great 2 years with his comedy show that doesn’t really hold back.
True that. I’ve also been watching Conan O’Brien must go on Max and he still manages to be completely irreverent without punching down. I think the best comedians are willing to make fun of themselves as much (or more) than anybody else. A comic who takes himself too seriously is missing the point somehow.
This was awful
Seinfeld’s wife gave money to group that beat up UCLA students last week. Make fun of that Jerry…
Can we be done with Jerry Seinfeld again for a while? Thanks.
Seinfeld’s bit was small, but appreciated his warning to Ryan Gosling. But the rest of the jokes on weekend update this week were hilarious. Lots of great zingers this week.
