The Wells Fargo Championship Preview

There are 15 major champions in the field at Quail Hollow. Scheffler may not be there, but headlining the event are Rory McIlroy, defending champion Wyndham Clark and Jordan Spieth.

Clark will look to build off his strong start to the 2024 season. He has one win under his belt at the AT&T Pebble Beach event, two runner up finishes and four top 10s. Last year, he saw everything click together at this event. It helped give Clark the confidence to win the U.S. Open. Clark’s game is in the right place, which means a title defense could be on the horizon.

McIlroy is coming off his 25th PGA Tour victory. He and Shane Lowry won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans title two weeks ago. The Northern Irishman looks to build off that momentum heading into Valhalla and the PGA Championship. This week could be a big one for the four-time major winner.

Quail Hollow is a place that fits his style of play. He is the only three-time winner of the event and if he continues to putt well, McIlroy could see win No. 26.

Spieth missed the CJ Cup Byron Nelson cut last week as his woes continue. However, it is hard to count him out when the sparks of greatness are there.

Will Zalatoris withdrew with a back flare-up last week, but he is back in the field this week. Meanwhile, Ludvig Åberg will look for continued success near the top of leaderboards week after week.

With the PGA Championship looming, this week will allow guys to sharpen their games and get into that competitive headspace. There will be no cut, so players can use all four days to fine-tune themselves for next week’s gauntlet.
