FREMONT — A crash suspected to be caused by driving under the influence killed a pedestrian working outside a Tesla factory last week, police said Tuesday.

The collision happened about 11:30 p.m. Friday in the 45000 block of Fremont Boulevard. Police said the driver was subsequently injured when he crashed into a traffic pole about a quarter-mile away.

Authorities identified the pedestrian as Taniela Fanau Hafoka , 26, of Oakland. They said he was outside the factory on a break when the vehicle hit him.

In a statement, Fremont police said they arrested a 58-year-old Sunnyvale man on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage causing injury.

Hafoka had major injuries when police and rescue personnel arrived. According to police, rescuers tried CPR and utilized an automated external defibrillator, but Hafoka died at the scene.

The crash was the first fatal collision this year investigated by Fremont police.

The suspect went to a hospital and had what police called minor injuries. He remained in custody at Alameda County Jail on Tuesday afternoon in lieu of $150,000 bail.
