DBKL ordered to manage city’s ageing trees following Jalan Sultan Ismail incident that resulted in one death

Following yesterday’s thunderstorm that resulted in a large tree toppling along Jalan Sultan Ismail, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has been ordered to prepare new guidelines to manage the city’s ageing trees, The Star reports.

According to minister in the prime minister’s department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa, many of the trees in the city are between 50 and 80 years old, and it was important to catalogue them due to unpredictable weather conditions.

“This tree was under private supervision, but we need to increase the frequency of these inspections, especially given the unpredictable weather conditions. Sometimes trees appear healthy on the outside, but they are internally not, which is why it’s critical to establish proper guidelines,” she said at the site of the incident.

Yesterday’s incident that occurred just outside the Concorde Hotel saw a large tree come crashing down on 17 vehicles, while also damaging a bus stop and a monorail track in the area. As reported by Bernama, a 47-year-old man was confirmed dead while a 26-year-old man suffered serious injuries.

Certified arborist Dr Ahmad Ainuddin Nuruddin told The Star the tree could have fallen due to root crown failure, which could have been caused by restricted root growth due to the limited space caused by development.

in the google map, the tree was so big while the trunk was way too small to support it (observations, not tree expert). if they do trim up the tree periodically, these kind of things could have been avoided. sadly, with the work attitude of our gov agencies, no one will be bothered and blame it to God’s will. and now with the 13% increment, i doubt any changes at all

Aborists said..due to root crown failure…so what the fuss to categorise this n that?
From the videos, even a kindy kid realised it was the shallow roots giving way,due to the massive weight of the tree.
Just chop all the blardy trees above 20 ft.
KL is like the ” hanging gardens of Babylon” if we continue this madness.
    Today,one death.Tomorrow ? The casualties will skyrocket.

  • Heritage Tree need to get Upgraded Maintenance, Preserve.
Even considering quality Structural Support so there will be no collapsing harm.

How can Heritage Tree to be a short tree by simply cut and trim.
    Simply lost its value.

Need to push DBKL to do abit more.
Our public services workforce is large and bloated. Is even bigger than indon considering our population is alot smaller.
This is not going to change anytime soon. The only way is to make them do more for rhe nation and increase efficiency.
With the recent annoucement of salary increase for the public sector, i hope they are all pumpep up to carry more tasks for the nation.
