RICHMOND — Work to repair a water main break that forced a four-block closure of a main boulevard early Wednesday continued into the afternoon.

Carlson Boulevard remained closed between S. 47th Street and S. 43rd Street and was expected to remain that way until at least 3 p.m., according to a statement from the city of Richmond.

Richmond Fire and East Bay Municipal Utility District officials were called to the area about 5:20 a.m., authorities said.

East Bay MUD spokesperson Sun Kwong Sze said repairs would be be finished before 8 p.m.

“We have to excavate the old pipe and put in the new one,” Sze said. “It’s gonna take some time.”

According to East Bay MUD, a 12-inch cast iron pipe burst. The pipe is on 45th Street.

The break affected about 21 homes and left them without water, authorities said. The break is near Kennedy High, the Richmond Swim Center and Booker T. Anderson Park, but none of those places were affected. Kennedy High remained open.

It was not known immediately what caused the water main to burst.
