Another exciting season of the IPL 2024 is going on. In this ongoing season, a number of new faces grabbed the attention depending on their enormous talent. Punjab Kings batter Shashank Singh is one of them. He has showcased his exceptional batting ability in crucial situations. In a recent interaction, he has been opened up about his long domestic career and IPL days with the PBKS.
Shashank Singh on His Long Domestic Career:
In this IPL, Shashank Singh’s fighting spirit caught the attention. At any crucial point, when Punjab Kings need a responsible yet power-hitter Shashank is there. Interestingly, the PBKS batter came to the limelight in this season only but he got his first IPL contract six years ago. He is dominating India’s domestic circuit for the last 10 years. On that stage, he showcased his enormous talent and excellence with the bat.
In a recent interaction, he opened up about his journey. He said, “It feels good when someone refers to me as a find. Ultimately, that’s because I have been able to back myself, showcase my potential, and deliver frequently this IPL season.”
With that, he added, “People like you follow domestic cricket so closely that you know that I have been around the circuit for a decade now. I am not sure how I have fared, but I have survived. I have always been confident about my abilities, and I am glad I have been able to execute them better.”
From Being Unsold to PBKS’ Hero:
Before come to the limelight in IPL 2024, he made his IPL debut for Sunriswrs Hyderabad in 2022. But after the season ended, he was released by the franchise and remained unsold in the auction. Shashank’s entry in IPL 2024 and his form is now known to everyone. While talking about this matter, he said, “This is a byproduct of all the struggles I have had at various levels. I have learned from every failure and little success I have had over all these years.”
In that interaction, he shared a little moment of himself with Jonny Bairstow portraying how the English star encouraged him. He said, “I got a duck in our season opener was sitting dejected in the dug-out, and suddenly Jonny tapped me from behind and said, ‘If I don’t see you smiling, I will stop speaking with you’. I have kept it in mind ever since.”
On the Confusion at the Auction:
Shashank’s journey took an unexpected turn during the IPL Auction in Dubai on December 19. Amidst the excitement of being bid for by a franchise, confusion arose due to another player with the same name seemingly being favored. Despite the initial hiccup and subsequent clarification from the franchise the next day, Shashank remained undeterred, ready to embrace whatever challenges lay ahead in his cricketing career.
On this matter, he said, “Hitesh Goswami sir, our Chhattisgarh head coach and talent scout for the franchise, indicated that Punjab Kings was interested in me,” he recalls. “It’s been reduced to nothing but a joke in our camp ever since.”
