Cowboys release WR Martavis Bryant from practice squad

On the same day the Dallas Cowboys brought in free agent wide receiver Zay Jones for a visit, the team opened a spot on the roster by releasing Martavis Bryant on Wednesday. Bryant was signed to a futures contract in January after initially being released, but is now on the market again after never appearing in a regular season game for the Cowboys.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the 32-year old receiver is expected to draw interest from other teams. The last NFL game he appeared in was with the Raiders in Week 10 of 2018.

The Cowboys took a flyer on Bryant when he was reinstated from suspension to possibly give them another option in a WR room that is top-heavy. They have CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks, with Jalen Tolbert, sixth-round pick Ryan Flournoy, Jalen Brooks and the possibility of Zay Jones signing in Dallas. The Cowboys must feel they have the bodies to at least go to training camp with at wide receiver.

Receiver and running back will continue to be two of their most scrutinized positions this offseason as they look to take another step in year two of Mike McCarthy’s offense, where the loss of Bryant won’t be felt as he never appeared on the active roster.
