Blow to classic British chip as shock poll shows French fries are now more popular

FRENCH fries are more popular than the classic British chip, according to shock research.
A staggering 62 per cent of Brits say they prefer the longer, skinnier potato treat from across the Channel.

Main reasons for shunning our traditional thick chips are the fries’ crispier texture (cited by 58 per cent), lack of greasiness (32 per cent), no going soggy (24 per cent) and you can get more of them on a plate (18 per cent).
Rubbing salt and vinegar in the wound, 56 per cent said the French have better food than us.
Whether you prefer a chip or a fry, the go-to condiment for them is ketchup (chosen by 50 per cent), followed by curry sauce (31 per cent) then gravy (19 per cent).
On average, Brits eat chips or fries three times a week, with 44 per cent describing themselves as a connoisseur of fried potatoes.

Of those, London has by far the most at 67 per cent, with Leicester second (52 per cent) then Birmingham (51 per cent).
Less bothered are folk in Norwich (26 per cent), Cambridge (25 per cent) and Plymouth (29 per cent).
Men are more likely to be fanatics (47 per cent) than women (41 per cent).
Some 65 per cent said they would have them with every meal if they could.

More than half (53 per cent) put the sauce on the side, while one in three (32 per cent) slather it all over, according to a poll of 2,000 by Côte Brasserie.
