Receiving spam messages on social media is nothing new, but some people are afraid that things may have recently changed on Facebook.

Users reported receiving an uptick in fake tags on their accounts over the last week, sometimes dozens in a single day.

"Been on FB for 12+ years, might finally quit because of unending spam tags the last two days on inappropriate posts," read one post in the Facebook Reddit thread (r/facebook).

"The last two days I’ve gotten upwards of 20 spam posts tagging me. Usually a photo of a woman breastfeeding and some sort of link," RutabagaMurky2126 (u/RutabagaMurky2126) explained.

And while savvy social media users know how to block the tags from being shared with the public, dealing with all the notifications can be a pain.

"I made my settings so I have to pre-approve everything I’m tagged in. But it’s getting so annoying it might really be what makes me leave Facebook if this continues any longer," the user wrote.

And they added that they blame Facebook for the trouble.

"The thing that annoys me the most is Facebook could easily fix this by placing limits on who can tag who, like making it so only friends can tag or some similar limit... I’m imagining innocent elderly people facing this issue and can imagine it being a bit mortifying."

Other Facebook users agreed that they were getting fed up with the issue.

"Is anyone else randomly being tagged in these inappropriate spam 'videos' on Facebook? I’ve never really dealt with this until the last week and now it’s multiple a day," zeppelinbm (u/zeppelinbm) commented in the same thread.

Several accounts about the increased spam were reported by the internet watcher site Distractify on Tuesday.

Reporters confirmed that several people said they were being tagged in breastfeeding videos, but said it was unclear why this genre of clips was being used.

Luckily, there are a few simple fixes to block spam tags from clogging up your Facebook account.

HOW TO MANUALLY APPROVE FACEBOOK TAGS

If you cannot stop spammers from tagging you, you can at least stop the labels from showing up on your profile.

It takes just a couple of simple steps to set up your Facebook account so that all photo, video, or post tags require your approval before getting shared with your audience.

To get started, head to your Facebook page and click on your profile picture.

Select See All Profiles to choose the page you want to manage.

Choose who see's your Facebook photo tags

Choose who can see posts that you've been tagged in after they've appeared on your profile. Here's how:

  1. Click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook.
  2. Select Settings and privacy, then click Settings.
  3. In the left column, click Profile and tagging.
  4. Look for the setting Who can see posts that you're tagged in on your profile? and click Edit on the far right.
  5. Select the audience of people (such as Friends) who you'd like to be able to see the posts you've been tagged in.

You can also review photos and posts that you're tagged in before they appear in your profile using Review posts that you're tagged in before the post appears on your profile? in your Profile and tagging settings.

Bear in mind that photos and posts you hide from your profile are visible to the audience that they're shared with in other places on Facebook, such as in Feed and search.

View your Profile and tagging settings.

Once highlighted, go to the Settings & Privacy tab and click on the Page and Tagging option.

There, you can access the Tagging and Reviewing sections, which allow you to choose who can tag you and who can see when you are tagged.

Choose between several options, including making your tags automatically available to the public, your friends — or only yourself.

Then choose if any images or video can go live without your prior approval, or if you want to give the green light on everything that goes on your page.
