Haydock 1.35 - Might I each way

To be blunt, it's been an underwhelming season for the Harry Fry trained MIGHT I, but this looks a good opportunity to reignite the spark in this 3m Handicap Hurdle. An early error put pay to any chances he had in the Coral Cup, but to his credit ran a lot better at Aintree, when staying on pat beaten runners to make some eye-catching late headway and finish sixth over 2m4f.

On that evidence he is worth another crack at 3m; in his early days he tried three miles and fell in a hole when far too keen, but as he is getting older he is shaping more and more as though this trip will be perfect for him.

Off a mark of 138, he is now 7lb lower than placed in the Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle at last year's Cheltenham Festival, so looks dangerously well-treated. Lorcan Murtagh takes the ride, and this combination could go well at an each-way price.

Haydock 3.15 - Lark In The Mornin

LARK IN THE MORNIN was a very smart winner of this season's Boodles Fred Winter at the Cheltenham Festival, and has a golden opportunity to scoop a big pot here in the Swinton Hurdle.

The Joseph O'Brien trained representative bolted up off 122, and although taking on some more seasoned campaigners, if he jumps and travels the way in which he did last time out then he could easily have the scope off this mark to get win again here.

Drying ground shouldn't inconvenience this smooth mover, for all that he has all his form on a much slower surface. JJ Slevin will be on board the 4-year-old who could easily be ahead of his mark still.

Haydock 3.50 - Pogo

POGO is a battle-hardened 8-year-old who has been hitting the crossbar in recent times, but could easily get back in the winner's enclosure here for the Charlie Hills and Richard Kingscote combination. The son of Zebedee finished fourth in Group 2 at Sandown last time out, which on figures was about as good as could have been expected.

Eased into Listed company here, he could easily stamp his authority on his rivals here. It is worth noting that he is a bit of a niche performer over the 7f, and won on his only previous start over course and distance, when landing the John Of Gaunt Stakes in 2022. If he brings his A-game to the table he won't be far away.

Warwick 7.05 - War Lord

The wheels have really come off in recent times for the Joe Tizzard trained WAR LORD, but he has the back class to be getting involved here reverting back to smaller obstacles. He's totally lost his way over fences, but could be a danger to all in this encounter if fired up for this.

Off 128, he could feel like he is running free, considering that only as recently as last November, he put in a cracking display when third in the Haldon Gold Cup off 145, when trying to concede 6lb to stable mate Elixir De Nutz.

In the context of this, that is outstanding form, and if this switch to Hurdles does the trick then he is more than capable of ruffling a few feathers here given his back-class. Brendan Powell takes the ride and they could easily cause an upset.

Ted's picks for Sunday, Lucky 15, May 12:

  • Ludlow 3.28 - Sergeant Wilson each way - bet with CopyBet
  • Plumpton 5.00 - Copperhead  - bet with BetMGM

Ludlow 3.28 - Sergeant Wilson

SERGEANT WILSON is a bit of an enigma, but isn't out of the equation here, dropping down in trip and eased to a career-low mark of 105. The 6-year-old was far too keen when upped in distance to 2m3f at Taunton recently, and unsurprisingly didn't last home over that trip.

He is now 7lb lower than when narrowly beaten at Doncaster last year, and so he is starting to look undeniably well handicapped coming into this assignment. The Nigel Twiston-Davies team have suddenly hit a purple patch, operating at a 42% strike-rate for May, and so a revival could easily be on the cards with the stable in rude health.

Plumpton 5.00 - Copperhead

The wheels have well and truly come off COPPERHEAD in recent times, but the silver lining is that he has plummeted down the weights, and this looks like very much last chance saloon for him.

Rated 155 at his peak over fences in 2020, he has dropped down to 114 here so I am going to roll the dice for one last hurrah. Having come down 41lb in the weights in 4 seasons it is now or never for the Joe Tizzard trained 10-year-old.

In this small field he should be more than capable of making an impact here, and gets the vote from me with the excellent Freddie Gingell in the saddle claiming 3lb.

Ed will be back on Tuesday with his best bets, and don't forget that York's Dante Meeting kicks off on Wednesday with Ed serving up his best bets on the Knavesmire...
