Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

17:00

Tottenham come from behind at home to beat Burnley, dooming Kompany’s side to the Championship in the process as they secure a third-consecutive victory with a 2-1 win. Bruun Larsen gave the visitors the lead after 25 minutes with a well-taken goal thanks in large part to a fantastic Berge assist, but the relegation battlers were pegged back seven minutes later through Porro’s smashed finish. Despite the result hanging in the balance ahead of the restart, Burnley looked sapped of energy as they attempted to stop wave after wave of Spurs attack, with Muric often giving the hosts a chance to start their moves from higher up the pitch. Van de Ven would decide the result eight minutes from time with pinpoint accuracy, beating the goalkeeper at his far post with a low strike. Fully deserving of the three points after creating an expected goals of 2.5, compared to Burnley’s 0.75, Tottenham stay in fifth ahead of their penultimate match of the season against Manchester City on Tuesday. Burnley are relegated to the second division and can finish no higher than 18th, and will play their last game of the campaign next Sunday at home against Nottingham Forest. That concludes our commentary of the Premier League fixture between Tottenham and Burnley, we hope you’ve enjoyed it!

MURIC KEEPS IT LEVEL! A scramble inside Burnley’s penalty area leads with Sarr’s beautifully shaped first-time curling shot from the edge of the 18-yard box, but the goalkeeper manages to throw himself at the ball despite coming way off his line during his initial attempt to stop Romero’s cutback pass!

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

16:37

Play is stopped for both Benson and Bissouma, after a coming-together on the edge of Tottenham’s 18-yard box has left the substitute and the midfielder down in need of some treatment. The Burnley player seems to come off worse but both should be okay to continue after taking a moment, which allows the hosts to make a few changes.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

16:34

Cullen chips a pass out to the left wing for a seemingly open Bruun Larsen, but Van de Ven shows off his speed by charging across the pitch and getting to the ball first, controlling it with his head before playing it back to Vicario.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

16:25

O’Shea is late to a loose ball in midfield, committing somewhat overzealously before pulling Maddison down cynically to give Tottenham a free-kick 35 yards from goal.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

16:23

Van de Ven rises highest to meet Maddison’s outswinging corner, but the centre-back sends his close-range header into the marking Esteve, who prevents Muric from being called into action.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

16:23

MADDISON DOES EVERYTHING BUT SCORE! The Tottenham midfielder drifts out to the left, playing a one-two pass with Son before driving past both Bruun Larsen and Assignon to get into the penalty area. He shifts his body to slip away from O’Shea and hits a low shot to the far post to finish off the move, but it’s smothered by Muric!

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

Burnley get the match restarted from the kick-off!

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:55

Burnley’s only chance of staying in the Premier League rests on winning this fixture, which leaves Kompany with little option but to throw players forward as the match wears on. Gudmundsson’s delivery from set-pieces and aerial ability could be utilised by the visitors, while the experience of Rodriguez could also help what is a young starting XI during moments of pressure. Tottenham also need the three points to keep the pressure on Aston Villa for the final Champions League spot, not that Postecoglou needs added reason to instruct his side to attack. Bentancur’s introduction could help the hosts control the tempo, while Lo Celso could be added to take some of the creative pressure off Maddison.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:52

Burnley took the lead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but will have to be happy with a tie at half-time, as Spurs managed to pull one back to leave the two teams at 1-1 after 45 minutes. No surprise as the hosts dominated both possession and total shots, but it was Kompany’s side that were more clinical in the early stages, hitting the target with both of their first-two shots; the second resulting in the opening goal of the game after Bruun Larsen latched onto Berge’s threaded pass to beat Vicario. Muric’s turnovers in midfield would help spark the hosts’ equaliser just seven minutes later however, with the goalkeeper constantly putting his midfield under pressure with a number of telegraphed clearances. Postecoglu’s side finally found their feet towards the end of the half, with Son letting a number of strikes fly, and ended the period with a better expected goals (0.59 to 0.52) despite trailing in the metric for large parts.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:51

HALF-TIME: TOTTENHAM 1-1 BURNLEY.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:49

The fourth official indicates two minutes will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:48

Nine of Burnley’s 40 Premier League goals this season have come from outside the box, the highest percentage of any side this term (22.5%). They’ve never scored 10 or more from distance in a single Premier League campaign.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:46

Muric’s kick out from the back is again intercepted easily by a Tottenham player, with Son bringing it down before cutting inside and firing a shot from 20 yards out that takes a deflection on its way over the crossbar and behind for a corner.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:44

Bruun Larsen’s outswinging corner is nodded away by Romero, who is also the first one out of his 18-yard box, forcing Assignon to play it all the way back to Muric.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:41

Kulusevski cuts inside and plays a low cross through the legs of Assignon for Skipp, whose first touch takes the ball past O’Shea but bouncing up into the arms of a grateful Muric.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:41

Despite a number of misplaced passes in dangerous areas, Kompany’s side seem to have no qualms about continuing to operate in the same manner, looking to build attacks through Muric at the back. It’s led to them almost conceding on more than one occasion, but that style of play is also directly responsible for Burnley’s opener.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:39

JOHNSON CAN’T TAKE ADVANTAGE! More self-inflicted wounds for Burnley, with Muric not playing his pass out to the right for Taylor with nearly enough power. The lax hit allows Johnson to win the ball back inside the 18-yard box but he chooses to hit an acute-angle shot that catches the side-netting instead of playing a square pass for Son!

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:35

Burnley seem set against pressing Tottenham high up the pitch now that they have a lead, with Kompany instructing his players to defend their own half. Foster and Odobert are camped on the centre-circle as the first line of defence, allowing Van de Ven and Romero to creep forward.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:32

A Burnley giveaway in midfield allows Son to pick up possession and drag his team up the pitch in search of an equaliser, but Kulusevski’s eventual cross provides a straightforward catch for Muric.

Muric’s kick out from the back is intercepted easily by Sarr, who plays a one-two pass with Johnson before picking out Son 18 yards from goal. In a central position, the forward turns and fires a low, left-footed strike but it fails to trouble the Burnley shot-stopper.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:24

Vitinho looks to take on Porro before slipping an incisive pass through the lines for Foster, who fails to read the intentions of his team-mate, allowing Vicario to stroll off his goal-line to collect the ball.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:22

Maddison goes down inside the 18-yard box under close marking from Berge and appeals for a penalty, but the referee immediately signals for play to continue, with the Tottenham forward running into his opponent.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:21

Johnson again struggles to find the final ball, taking up an advanced position down the right wing before pulling a pass back to Porro, which is easily intercepted by the industrious Vitinho, who read the play intelligently.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:19

A Tottenham attack comes to a disappointing end, with Johnson initially beating Taylor before getting his signals crossed and sending an off-target shot into the side-netting, with team-mates queuing up on the penalty spot.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:16

Bruun Larsen curls his free-kick towards the penalty spot, but Bissouma shows endeavour, cutting across to get to the ball first and clear it away.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:16

Assignon has gone down awkwardly, with Kulusevski landing on the heel of the full-back during his sprint towards the penalty area. It’s a free-kick for Burnley in an advantageous position for a cross, with Bruun Larsen tasked with its delivery.

Johnson and Porro combine expertly down the flank, with the full-back’s turn almost getting him through on goal. Vitinho tracks back to help Taylor force their opponent out of the 18-yard box, before drawing a foul to clear their lines.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:12

MURIC MAKES THE SAVE! Kulusevski takes a step inside from the left wing and plays a flat switch of play out to the right-hand side of the Burnley penalty area. The ball sails over the head of Sarr but falls kindly to Johnson, whose first-time volley is turned behind by the goalkeeper!

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:09

GREAT SAVE! Odobert takes on and beats Skipp down the left, opening up just enough room to tease a cross to the far post. Vitinho leaps highest and meets the delivery, sending his header back the other way, but Vicario throws up an arm and manages to tip it over the crossbar!

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

15:08

Maddison’s first corner of the match for Spurs is a poor attempt, with Cullen able to whack it away at his near post.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

14:34

Burnley’s relegation can be confirmed today, with five points out of their last five matches potentially not enough to give them a springboard ahead of the final matchday. Two points behind Luton in 18th and five behind Nottingham Forest - who have had their points deduction confirmed - anything but a win and a Forest loss will see Vincent Kompany’s side drop back down to the Championship after a season in the top flight.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

14:34

England’s inability to secure a fifth Champions League spot ahead of next season has left Tottenham the odd-man out, sitting seven points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa with three matches to play (Villa have one fewer left on their schedule). Newcastle have taken full advantage of Spurs’ four-game losing streak, cutting the gap to just four points, meaning Ange Postecoglu’s team must also look over their shoulder as the season comes to a close.
