Tailteann Cup Round One
Down made a winning start to their Tailteann Cup campaign as last year’s beaten finalists defeated Limerick 1-20 to 1-6 at Páirc Esler.
Limerick’s only score from play was a stunning goal from Peter Nash early in the second half moments after Daniel Guinness had found the net for the hosts at the other end.
The Mournemen led 0-10 to 0-4 at half-time and kicked clear in the third quarter despite a black card for Eamonn Brown.
The Treaty finished with 14 men after substitute Jamie Baynham was shown a straight red for a strike on Ryan Johnston two minutes after his introduction.
Earlier in the day, Fermanagh claimed an impressive 3-16 to 0-9 win over Wicklow in Group Three.
The Ernemen led 0-8 to 0-4 at the break, but pulled clear in the second half with goals from Sean Cassidy and a brace from substitute Conor Love.
London earned their first Championship win in 11 years by beating Offaly 2-20 to 0-12 in Tullamore.
Sligo fought back from being a point behind against Wexford at half-time to win by six, 2-21 to 2-15, in a high-scoring game in Markievicz Park.
Kildare ensured there would be no shock result as they marked their Tailteann Cup debut with a facile 3-25 to 1-11 win over Longford at Hawkfield.
Paddy Woodgate’s first half goal helped the Lilywhites to a 1-16 to 0-5 lead at the break and his second early in the second half confirmed the result long before the finish.
Darren Gallagher found the net for Longford in a one-sided contest with Paddy McDermott scoring Kildare’s third goal in stoppage-time.
