Netflix should be subject to tougher regulations on fairness and privacy, the expert who drew up the UK’s broadcasting rules has said after the Baby Reindeer safeguarding saga.

Chris Banatvala, formerly Ofcom’s director of standards, has argued that streaming giants including Netflix should be held to similar standards as those applied to broadcasters such as the BBC, which enable protagonists in dramas based on real events to complain to the media regulator if they believe they have been portrayed unfairly or their privacy has been infringed.

“It is right that as streamers become more and more popular, and are available in more and more households, that they become subject to TV-like regulation,” said Banatvala, who was also formerly an independent adviser to the BBC Trust.
