The beautiful summer weather of the past week are set to come to an abrupt end tonight as West Yorkshire braces itself for torrential rain and epic thunderstorms.

The Met Office has issued a Yellow weather warning for the west of the country, taking in Huddersfield, Calderdale, Bradford and Leeds, as well as South Yorkshire, including Sheffield. Already, the heavens have opened in Todmorden with thunder rumbling in the skies.

The Met Office says thunderstorms hill hit Huddersfield between 9pm and 10pm tonight but the warning is in place for the rest of today, Monday and Tuesday.

Extreme weather advice

Standard advice is not to travel when bad weather hits. Government advice states:

  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life, particularly in places such as road and railway underpasses.
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
