Piers Morgan slams Tottenham fans’ ‘act of treachery’ after Manchester City loss

Spurs fans were divided over whether they wanted their side to lose to Manchester City to prevent Arsenal from winning the Premier League, but is Piers Morgan right to criticise their mentality?

Talk show host Piers Morgan launched a brutal attack on Tottenham fans after they lost to Manchester City in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

Arsenal would have been in pole position to win the title on the final day had their arch-rivals picked up a point or more against the reigning champions, but a brace from Erling Haaland spoiled the party for the red half of North London.

Many Spurs fans were vocal in their wishes for Pep Guardiola’s men to win at their ground and admitted they would rather miss out on Champions League football if it meant stopping the Gunners from claiming a first league title since 2004.

On a bizarre night, there were plenty of Arsenal fans pledging their support for Ange Postecoglou’s side on social media, but they were left sodden after Heung-Min Son missed a huge chance late on in the game.

The day after, Mikel Arteta’s army still have not forgiven Spurs for refusing to do them a favour, particularly Morgan, who curated a live rant on talkSPORT, cursing his neighbours.

He said: “Jamie O’Hara and all the other little Spurs fans who were actually celebrating their team losing are possibly the most disgraceful bunch of tiny-club-mentality idiots I think world football has ever seen!

“I mean honestly, they were dancing around in celebration as Man City scored against them.

“It’s got to be the most embarrassing, humiliating, self-harming act of treachery I’ve ever seen and I really feel sorry [for them], because I’ve woken up this morning knowing how it feels to be a Spurs fan for a night and it’s horrible.

“I’ve woken up with a massive headache, I got hardly any sleep, I drank too much and I felt a sense of self-loathing which only disappeared when I remembered I was an Arsenal fan.

“I think on another night where they had the full support of their fans in the stadium, which is what normal fans would’ve done if they wanted to be a bigger club but the atmosphere was so dreadful.

“I thought Tottenham were competitive for a large part of that game, if you’re one of those players and you have a manager willing you on to do whatever you can to get a result and you look out to the fans who are just sat there silent for large sways of the match and then only jumping up and cheering when City score, what kind of message does that send to the players?

“I’m not just disappointed in Tottenham fans, but I think they should all feel a sense of collective shame, they won’t, but they should.”
