As the show has been airing for over three decades, the voice actors behind the cartoon characters have started to age, which can lead to vocal cord fatigue.

Viewers became disturbed after noticing that Mr Burns sounds very different in the latest season of the sitcom.

After a clip from season 35 of the show went viral, several people took to social media to express their concern over the 80-year-old star who plays the character.

Some even suggested that it might be time for Harry Shearer to give up the role.

One person wrote: "Burns’ voice is just brutal man. Let these people retire in peace."

Another sighed: "I know it’s inevitable with the age of the voice actors but Mr. Burns' voice on the latest episode is really throwing me off."

A third hit out: "I was not prepared for how bad this would be, it sounds like a fan dub."

Mr Burns was originally played by the late Christopher Collins before Harry took over.

The American actor and comedian also currently voices other characters on The Simpsons, including Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner, and Reverend Lovejoy.

One reason he may be avoiding retirement is because the job is quite lucrative, earning Harry $300,000 per episode.

After seeing the Mr Burns commentary, some fans rushed to Harry's defence, claiming that the voice actor behind Marge sounds a lot older.

Homer Simpsons iconic woohoo

One viewer shared: "Honestly, Burns' voice fits with him now? He sounds perfect now. Marge's voice? She needs a rest from breaking her vocal cords for that voice."

Another chimed in: "It took his Burns voice for people to realize this? Julie Kavner has been sounding like she’s tearing her vocal cords apart doing Marge’s voice for years now. Her Marge is so painful to listen to now."
