Menne, Schulz-Hanssen Lead ASU on Day One of NCAA Championship

CARLSBAD, Calif. - Sun Devil Women's Golf got off to an excellent start at the 2024 NCAA Women's Golf Championship.

Playing the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa North Course for the first time, No. 15 Arizona State looked comfortable, firing a 286 (-2) to earn a tie for sixth after 18 holes. Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye's team is ahead of National Title contenders No. 2 Wake Forest, No. 3 South Carolina, No. 4 LSU, No. 5 UCLA, No. 7 USC, No. 8 Texas, No. 10 Arkansas, and No. 11 Oregon, a testament to their first round effort. ASU sits six strokes back of overall leader No. 16 Clemson (-8/280) as the tournament remains wide open with three more days of stroke play remaining. The Maroon & Gold have established themselves as a clear threat to make the Top-15 cut, which takes place after Sunday's third round.

The Sun Devils were led by the duo of Ashley Menne and Paula Schulz-Hanssen. The two are tied for 13th after carding opening round 70s (-2) and are well within striking distance of the individual lead, trailing Lottie Woad (-7/65) from Florida State by only five strokes. Menne caught fire around the time of the turn, recording three birdies over a four-hole stretch from 17-2. Schulz-Hanssen was responsible for the lone Eagle of the for ASU, notching her team-best fifth Eagle of the season on 17. It was one of only three Eagles by a golfer on the first day of the championship.

Depth is the main reason why the Sun Devils are in a promising position following round one. Patience Rhodes and Beth Coulter each were making their NCAA Championship debut and proved that they belonged on the big stage. They both finished with 73s (+1), putting them in the top half of the 156-golfer field and giving ASU four solid counting scores. The Maroon & Gold will put to test what they learned on day one of the NCAA Championships, as they will begin the second round tomorrow morning. Grace Summerhays will get the Sun Devils started at 8:30 AM MST on Hole 1, with live scoring provided by Golfstat.

"Ashley and Paula did a great job leading us," Coach Farr-Kaye added. "When you get two excellent scores it helps set the tone for the rest of the group."

"The more familiar we get with the course, the more confident they will become," Coach Farr-Kaye concluded. "There were opportunities we left out there today and I can't wait to see how we approach tomorrow's round."

In the championship finals, all 30 teams and six individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play. Following 54 holes of competition, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals will advance for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match-play competition and the 72-hole stroke-play individual champion. The top eight teams after 72 holes of play will be placed into a bracket with the No. 1 seed playing the No. 8 seed, the No. 2 seed playing the No. 7 seed, the No. 3 seed playing the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed playing the No. 5 seed in match play.

A total of five points will be available with one point being awarded for each individual match. Winning teams will advance to the semifinals and subsequently the finals. The first team to win three points within the team match will advance, or in the case of the final match be declared the national champion.

THE COURSE
Formerly known as the Champions Course, the re-imagined North Course at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa is located just north of San Diego in Carlsbad. Nestled among 400 lush garden acres near pristine beaches and recognized as of one of the world's top golf and spa destinations, this iconic resort unveils a fresh new look in 2024 – including Gil Hanse's dramatic course redesign that paves the way for three consecutive NCAA Division I Championships. Learn more about the course by watching this video breakdown from Clipp'd.

HISTORY AT THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
The Sun Devil Women's Golf program is the most prestigious in the nation, taking home a NCAA record eight NCAA Championships. ASU won the National Championship in 1990, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2009, and 2017, dominating the women's collegiate golf scene for the last three decades. Nobody knew how to win at the NCAA Championship like legendary Head Coach Linda Vollstedt, who won five titles in nine years in the 1990's. The first came when current Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye was a player, starting the trifecta for Farr-Kaye. She later won as an Assistant Coach in 2009 and as a Head Coach in 2017, giving her three National Titles in three different roles. Since 2000, Arizona State has qualified for the NCAA Championship 21 times, one of only five programs who can make that claim (Stanford, Duke, USC, UCLA).
