Updates

Team champions crowned (5:36 p.m.): Eaglecrest may have gotten revenge in the 5A boys 1600 relay, but Cherokee Trail got the last laugh with its second consecutive team championship. Led the Peyton Sommers’ sprint sweep, the Cougars nearly lapped the field in the team standings with 111 points. The next closest was Mountain Vista at 58.

The 5A girls championship was a much, much, much tighter affair, with Rock Canyon claiming its first title in program history with 71 points, just ahead of a pack of Fossil Ridge (62.5), Mountain Vista (58) and Eaglecrest (53). The Jaguars got it done with a pair of titles in the 800 meter sprint medley and high jump (Petra McGowan) and a whole lot of depth.

Speaking of first-timers, the ascendant Northfield athletic program will get to add another piece of hardware to its trophy case after the Nighthawks claimed their first 4A boys team title. Meanwhile, the Niwot girls wrapped up their fifth consecutive 4A team crown. Here’s the top five in all five classfications:

5A boys: 1. Cherokee Trail 111; 2. Mountain Vista 58; 3. Cherry Creek 48; 4. Eaglecrest 42; 5. Overland 38.

5A girls: 1. Rock Canyon 71; 2. Fossil Ridge 62.5; 3. Mountain Vista 58; 4. Eaglecrest 53; 5. Grandview 46.

4A boys: 1. Northfield 74; 2. Niwot 66; 2. Montrose 66; 4. Lutheran 50; 5. Battle Mountain 42.

4A girls: 1. Niwot 158; 2. Windsor 60; 3. Pueblo West 57; 4. Longmont 51.5; 5. Cheyenne Mtn 45.

3A boys: 1. Classical Academy 118; 2. University 75.5; 3. Berthoud 58; 4. Resurrection Christian 54; 5. Holy Family 51.

3A girls: 1. Classical Academy 88; 2. Berthoud 84; 3. Holy Family 66; 4. Eaton 61; 5. Jefferson Acdy 51.

2A boys: 1. Peyton 89; 2. Banning Lewis 67.25; 3. Platte Canyon 56; 4. Cedaredge 44; 5. Limon 37.

2A girls: 1. Timnath 131; 2. Heritage Christian 66; 3. Dayspring Christian 55.5; 4. Wiggins 42; 4. Cedaredge 42.

1A boys: 1. Cheyenne Wells 64; 2. Haxtun 51; 3. South Baca 50.5; 4. Genoa-Hugo/Karval 48; 5. Lone Star 46.

1A girls: 1. Merino 106; 2. Sanford 72; 3. McClave 59; 3. Idalia 59; 5. Kiowa 52.

From out of nowhere! (4:33 p.m.): As the preliminary 1600 relay in Class 5A boys would have suggested, Saturday’s final did not disappoint. Going in, Cherokee Trail was the clear favorite, but Eaglecrest had something to prove, and it sure showed in the final lap. Behind two other teams and as many as seven meters from the front, Eaglecrest’s Peace Warah turned on the jets in the final 100 meters. Running on the homestretch into a 7.7 m/s headwind, both teams finished in 3:16.77, but the Raptors were ruled to have crossed just two thousandths of a second faster. — Braidon Nourse

Scottie Vines (3:02 p.m.): De Beque senior and Olympic trials qualifier Scottie Vines started way after everyone else had finished in the Class 1A boys high jump. He’ll be disappointed with failing to clear 7-2 ¼, but he cruised to a state title either way. — Braidon Nourse

Worst to first (3:00 p.m.): The advertised competition for the Class 4A boys 1600 meter run was supposed to be Battle Mountain seniors Will Brunner and Porter Middaugh, who put on an absolute show in the 3200 Friday and were the top two seeds entering the 1600. However, Niwot sophomore Rocco Culpepper, who snuck into the race with the 18th and final seed, came out of nowhere with a strong final lap to steal gold with a time of 4:17.23. — Braidon Nourse

Queen of the hurdles (2:25 p.m.): Gabriella Cunningham is Colorado’s queen of the hurdles for a second straight year. The Grandview senior swept the 5A girls hurdles once again Saturday, first taking the 100 hurdles in 13.73 seconds, then cruising in the 300 hurdles in 42.10, a full second ahead of the next finisher. — Matt Schubert

Sprint sweep No. 4 (1:55 p.m.): Yes, we’re really doing this again. Windsor’s Mikey Munn became the fourth runner to sweep the sprint events in their classification after winning the 4A boys 200-meter dash in 21.33 seconds. A year ago, Munn didn’t compete in a single individual event at state. Now, he’s the king of the sprints in 4A. — Matt Schubert

Another sprint sweep? Yes, another spring sweep (1:33 p.m.): Talk about a strong debut. Golden freshman Abigail Trapp claimed her third sprint title in a matter of hours, winning the 4A girls 200-meter dash in 24.88 seconds. Trapp was neck-and-neck with a pack of runners as they came out of the turn, then turned on the afterburners to pull away and complete the sprint sweep after wins in the 100 and 400. — Matt Schubert

Another sprint sweep (1:27 p.m.): It appears we’ve stumbled onto a theme here in the final day of the state meet. We have sprint sweep No. 2 after Roxy Unruh set her third meet record of the day with a 25.64-second first-place finish in the 1A girls 200. Earlier in the day she set new 1A girls meet marks in the 100 (12.21) and 400 (57.52). Not too shabby. — Matt Schubert

Sommers sweeps (1:14 p.m.): Peyton Sommers is officially the fastest high school runner in Colorado. The Cherokee Trail junior cemented that status with the third of his three sprint wins in the Class 5A meet on Saturday, winning the 200-meter dash in 21.13 seconds. Thrown together with 200 and 400 titles last spring, Sommers now has five sprint golds to his name in his prep career. — Matt Schubert

Allori all alone (12:53 p.m.): Isabel Allori stands alone in Class 3A. The Notre Dame recruit capped an incredible weekend with her third meet record, winning the 1600-meter run in 4 minutes, 45.44 seconds, to sweep the distance races. Throw in gold in the 3200 relay from earlier in the week, and she has four medals to take home with her. — Matt Schubert

LaFore finishes on top (12:40 p.m.): Two days after breaking the meet record in the 5A discus but finishing second to Overland’s Jarrius Ward, Chatfield senior Charlie LaFore closed out his meet on top with his second consecutive 5A shot put title. LaFore defended his crown with a throw of 64 feet, 6.5 inches, leaving him with three throwing titles in his prep career. — Matt Schubert

Fab freshman (11:53 a.m.): Get to know the name Abigail Trapp. The Golden freshman already has two state titles to her name Saturday after she followed up a win in the 4A girls 100 with another victory in the 400 in 55.05 seconds. With just the 200 to go, a sprint sweep is on the table. — Matt Schubert

Two races, two state meet records (11:45): Cheyenne Wells sophomore Roxy Unruh has arrived. After setting a state meet record in the 1A girls 100 meter dash earlier in the day, Unruh dominated the competition at 400 meters, setting another 1A meet record with a time of 57.52 seconds, a second and a half faster than second place. Unruh’s teammate, Perry Chadwick, followed with a first-place finish off his own in the 1A boys 400, winning in 50.45. — Braidon Nourse

Eike goes for two (11:42 a.m.): Valor Christian’s Dane Eike set the pace in the 5A boys 1600, and nobody was able to go with him. The senior won the event in 4:13.47 to claim his second state title of the weekend after winning the 3200 on Thursday. — Matt Schubert

Making it look easy (11:34 a.m.): Cherokee Trail junior Peyton Sommers, winner of the 5A 100 meter dash a bit ago, won his second title of the day, this time in the 400 with a time of 46.59. And boy, did he make it look easy. He easily made up the first stagger, running shoulder-to-shoulder with teammates Kahari Wilbon (second place) and Kaelan Kombo (fifth place) along the back stretch, then jogged his way to the title. He will look to sweep the 5A sprints with the 200 meter dash later today. –-Braidon Nourse

Michalak takes two (11:17 a.m.): Air Academy senior Bethany Michalak had to wait three years to win her second state track title. The wait for No. 3 was only two days. Michalak pulled away from the field in the final lap and cruised to the 5A girls 1600-meter title, winning in 4 minutes, 47.47 seconds. Michalak took home the 1600 on Thursday. Throw in a 4A title from her freshman year, and Michalak will finish with three in her decorated prep career before moving on to N.C. State. — Matt Schubert

Freshman and senior win 4A 100 meter dash (10:56 a.m.): The Class 4A girls 100 meter dash was tightly contested for basically the entirety of the race between the top five finishers, but Golden freshman Abigail Trapp won with a time of 12.22 seconds. In the next race, Windsor senior Mikey Munn held off Karamoko Sacko to win the 4A boys 100 in 10.58 seconds. He’ll look to sweep the sprints later today in the 200 and 400 meter dashes. — Braidon Nourse

Chasing down 5A titles (10:34 a.m.): Valor Christian’s Ellie Londo and Cherokee Trail’s Peyton Sommers’ quests to win multiple titles in the 5A sprints is off to a great start. Londo, a sophomore, got out of the blocks quickly and pulled away to claim the girls 100 meter dash in 11.73 seconds. It was a different story for Sommers, as the junior reeled in his competition over the last 50 meters to win in 10.54. — Matt Schubert

Record-breaker (10:07 a.m.): We have a new standard in the 100 meter hurdles. Northfield’s Karamoko Sacko broke the state record en route to the 4A title in the event, finishing in a blazing 13.43 seconds. Just imagine if he hadn’t have hit a hurdle midway through the race. — Matt Schubert

Photo finish (9:57 a.m.): Fountain-Fort Carson’s Kyler Lewis gave the crowd a clinic in finishing the race and showed why you should never give up. In the Class 5A boys 110 meter hurdles, Rangeview’s Jaheim Alexander had a commanding lead off the final hurdle and celebrated early, throwing his hands up in the air while Lewis sprinted and leaned for a photo finish. Both runners got official times of 14.36, but Lewis was determined to have won by three thousandths of a second. -Braidon Nourse

Four-timers club? (9:47 a.m.): Reagan Falletta, get ready to chase the four-timers club. The Pueblo East freshman claimed the 4A 100 hurdles in 14.42 seconds, setting up a possible four-year run. Not long after, Dayspring Christian senior Eboselulu Omofoma capped her own four-peat, running away from the field in the 2A 100 hurdles to set a new meet record in 14.24 seconds. She now has 10 individual state titles in her prep career with the chance to add an 11th in the triple jump. — Matt Schubert

Cunningham smokes the field (9:37 a.m.): In the first race of the day, the expected happened: Grandview senior Gabriella Cunningham defended her 5A 100-meter hurdles title with ease in 13.73 seconds. — Matt Schubert

Team updates (9:12 a.m.): We’ve got tight races up and down the classifications. The one to keep an eye on: The 5A girls looks like it might come down to the wire with a relative newbie taking the top spot. Mountain Vista, Rock Canyon, Ralston Valley, Fossil Ridge and Eaglecrest are all within six points of each other. None of those programs has won a team title in their program histories. — Matt Schubert

Championship Saturday (8:30 a.m.): The third and final day of the 2024 CHSAA state track and field championships has arrived. What comes next will be a fast and furious ride to the finish line as 78 individuals, 20 relays and 10 teams are crowned state champions over the next 10 hours. There will be drama. There will be down-to-the-wire finishes. And there will probably be a few tears. No matter what, it should be fun. — Matt Schubert
