Quarantine warns on treatment of spices, food products

Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS)

The Director-General of the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS), Dr Vincent Isegbe, has cautioned exports against use of  ethylene oxide (ETO)   on spices, food products. There is a misconception that ETO is a pesticide.

He told The Nation that though  other countries may allow it for treatment on spices, food products,Nigeria don’t not recommend it as an export requirement.

He noted: “ There is a great need for caution and application of necessary safeguards for the importation of ETO- treated consignment of spices and other plant products. These factors must be borne in mind when considering the importation of the spices.ETO is a very active and effective pesticide and fumigant such that it even kills many viruses, bacteria such Salmonella and many microorganisms. It can be compared to  methyl bromide. Its effectiveness warrants its use in sterilising medical equipments in healthcare facilities when the use of steam or other sterilising procedures are inappropriate. “

He added that the EU banned vanilla from the US because of frequent presence or traces of ETO in the plant products. “Therefore phytosanitary certification must be accompanied by additional declaration that there are no traces of ETO and adequate measures have been taken to mitigate ETO presence in the imported plant materials.  Since ETO works best as a disinfectant on dry material the dryness or percentage moisture content of the plant product must be specified or ascertained.

Ethylene has been found not harmful or toxic to humans in the concentrations found in ripening rooms (100-150 ppm.  However it is presumed that the India NPPO has certified that there is technically no traces of ETO. One fact is that ETO is a fumigant and the pesticide is released from the enclosure or container is opened or exposed.”
