Niger Delta youths caution Wike, Fubara over political tension in Rivers state

The Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, alongside other significant youth groups in the Niger Delta region, has issued a stern warning to Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is currently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

They caution both leaders to avoid actions that could lead to anarchy in the state.

The warning was detailed in a communiqué following a one-day peace and security summit.

The document was signed by notable youth leaders, including Alaye Theophilus, President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC); Doupere Precious, President of the Bayelsa Youth Association; Lord Knight, President of the Ibom Youth Council; and Emuejevoke Esesiobe, President of the Urhobo Youth Leader Council, among others.

Rivers State has been embroiled in political strife due to a power struggle between Wike and Fubara, leading to crises in the state House of Assembly and creating rifts within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The youth leaders stressed the need for political stability, reiterating Rivers State’s critical role in the Niger Delta region and Nigeria.

“We urge the politicians causing political turbulence in the state to sheath their swords,” the communiqué reads.

The youth leaders stated they would not allow Rivers State to descend into chaos, stressing the importance of maintaining law and order.

“We advocate for peace throughout the entire Niger Delta region, not just in Rivers State,” it stated.

The groups reiterated their commitment to fostering peace and development, recognizing that stability is crucial for economic growth and the well-being of the people.
