Simon Jordan suggests Mikel Arteta made a big mistake signing two players for Arsenal

Simon Jordan is adamant that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta shouldn’t have signed two players.

The Gunners ended the 2023/24 season as the runners-up, just like they did in the previous campaign. It was heartbreaking for them, but there are still a lot of positives to take from the season.

However, Jordan seems really unimpressed with two senior Arsenal players.

Simon Jordan explains why Arsenal signing Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko was a mistake

Arsenal were in desperate need of experience and a winning mentality before the start of the 2022/23 season.

Mikel Arteta had the youngest squad in the Premier League, and he was desperate to bring in players who could become an example.

Manchester City duo Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko – whom Arteta had worked with before at the Etihad Stadium – became the chosen ones.

Both players played a huge part in helping Arsenal become title contenders in their debut campaign at the Emirates, and they deserve a lot of praise for that.

However, Simon Jordan feels Arteta shouldn’t have bothered signing them.

He has claimed that Arsenal, who are trying to pip Manchester City to the top spot, should not be bringing in players who were not good enough for Pep Guardiola’s side.

“I just think you don’t buy players from another side that you are trying to beat who don’t think they are not good enough for their side,” Jordan said on talkSPORT (May 20, 2024, 10:27 am).

Jordan has missed a key point in his assessment

Simon Jordan has got it all wrong with his assessment of Arsenal above.

Before the start of the 2022/23 season, nobody expected the Gunners to get anywhere near the Premier League title – let alone stay on top of the table for two-thirds of the season.

At that stage, signing two proven winners like Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko was absolutely the right thing to do, and Arsenal’s position in the league table after their arrival proves that point.

Even Martin Keown said the same after Jordan’s assessment.

“The thing was Arsenal needed that experience, though, of winning trophies. Zinchenko and Jesus did do that. They came in and added an ingredient. You have to say that. This was an impressionable young group and needed leaders amongst them,” Keown said.

An argument can be made now that Arsenal have moved past Jesus and Zinchenko, but to suggest that signing them in 2022 was a mistake is just lazy analysis, in our opinion.
